Anulom Vilom Pranayama is a popular breathing exercise associated with traditional yoga which is used to
calm the mind and body. ‘Anulom’ translates as ‘with the grain’ or ‘natural’ whilst ‘vilom’ means ‘against the
grain’. We can do this exercise through deep breath inhalation and exhalation while alternating between
the right and left nostril with the help of our fingers.
This Pranayama is very simple to perform and has a
large number of benefits:
Stress reduction
We can reduce stress by performing this exercise and in turn improve the overall performance of the body.
This also helps us keep ailments like depression and anxiety at bay. Even the way our brain functions
improves, which helps to:
- Prevent neurological disorders
- Reduce headaches/migraines
- Manage anger
- Improve quality of sleep
Maintains blood pressure
Blood circulation is critical for maintaining body parts and a stable mind. Pranayama maintains
the blood pressure and purifies the veins and nerves in the entire body. It can also cure ailments
associated with BP, such as heart blockages and diabetes.
Improves digestion
Regulated breathing shields us against stomach infections, constipation issues and other illnesses.
It strengthens the functioning of the digestive system and can also help in excess weight reduction
and obesity disorders. This requires one to have natural and high-quality food which not only
improves digestion but imbibes positive energy.
Reduces sinus problems and snoring
Constant breathing removes blockages in nostrils and ensures the smooth flow of oxygen supply
in the body. Issues such as sinus and snoring would subsequently be cleared and improve the
quality of sleep. It also helps strengthen the immune system and fights against viruses such as
common cold and cough.
Strengthens Lungs
Anuloma viloma also causes the stamina of the lungs to improve rapidly and treats respiratory
issues like asthma and other allergies. It combats infections which can otherwise cause problems
like bronchitis or chest infection. With the improvement of the overall breathing pattern, one
can focus on breathing in positive energy and releasing negative energy.
